How The Rating Works
Coffee and service, rated separately. A great flat white and a rushed welcome are two different stories, so we score them as two. Every rating on Beany has both dimensions, and you always see them side by side.
Only members rate. Every score comes from someone who checked in at the shop and tasted what they graded. No anonymous drive-bys, no imported reviews from other platforms, no "one star, coffee too expensive" from someone who wandered in looking for a 1 € espresso. Members chose to be part of this community, and it shows in how they rate.
The math is plain. We average each member's ratings per shop, then average those across all members. That's the score. No weighting, no algorithmic boosts, no "sponsored" adjustments. And no shop can pay to change a number: cafés and roasters don't pay us, ever. Not for pins, not for scores.
What a score means. Being on Beany means we verified the café serves real specialty coffee. The score on top of that is the community's take on how good it is. Those are two different things, and we keep them strictly apart: the pin is our homework, the score is the community's verdict.
We rate like everyone else. Beany doesn't grade cafés from headquarters. We check in and rate as members of the community: one voice among many.
And then there are Beany's Favorites. Some cafés carry a Favorites badge: the places we, the people behind Beany, love most. That's personal taste, labeled as exactly that, and it never moves a score. Think of it as us sharing our own list, the way every member does.
